Ketosis Diets For Weight Loss And Other Health Benefits

Ketosis diets are sometimes called ketogenic or low carbohydrate diets. Ketosis is a biochemical phenomenon that occurs during starvation or extreme carbohydrate restriction, but the word must not be confused with keto acidosis, which happens to diabetics when their blood sugar goes out of hand.

Ketoacidosis is dangerous, but only occurs in diabetics. Keto is a natural phenomenon that is not dangerous and has some miraculous health benefits. Some people think that ketosis is somehow harmful, but they confuse these two terms.

Ketosis diets have been used in the past to control epileptic seizures in children who have not responded to medication. These diets were often used for this purpose earlier in the 20th century. Interest in this nutritional plan has been restored to diseases such as brain tumor, obesity, diabetes and more.

Ketosis diets and obesity

Ketogenic low carbohydrate diets have been screened for obesity and are well documented, and participants usually have an appetite suppressant effect. When researchers compare low-fat and low-carbohydrate diets, they must actively limit the calories in the low-fat group to achieve comparable results.

Low carbohydrate diets often contain a lot of saturated fat, but they can improve biomarkers such as HDL cholesterol, insulin resistance and triglyceride levels and have a positive effect on the small, dense type (bad) LDL cholesterol pattern.

There are many claims that ketogenic diets are limiting, but in many studies, people who follow these diets are more likely to end studies than the comparison groups (usually low fat / high carbohydrate diets).

Most studies on the benefits of diet ketosis in epileptic seizures in children show a marked improvement, which is especially important as these children have generally not responded to prior drug therapy.

In one study, 38% of children who fed ketosis reduced the frequency of seizures by more than 50%, while 7% had a decrease by more than 90%. A modified Atkins diet, in fact an extended Atkins induction phase, showed similar results.


Many other diseases can greatly benefit from ketosis diets, and strangely these types of diets are not used more often for therapeutic purposes. The side effects of medicines, which are often not as effective, are certainly much worse than the mild side effects and small nuances of a restricted diet.
