Transformation of the Day: DaVina lost 201 pounds. High blood pressure, prediabetes, high cholesterol, and sleep apnea did not stop her. This Zeta Phi Beta soror reclaimed her health with RNY surgery, healthier eating habits, and exercise.
What was your motivation?
To improve my health. At 441.8 pounds, I endured high blood pressure, high cholesterol, prediabetic, and severe sleep apnea. I was two seconds away from having a stroke. My goal was never to fit into a specific size. My goal was to break a vicious cycle.
What inspired you to keep going when you wanted to give up?
My nieces and nephews inspired me. Being here for my family and living, not just existing anymore, inspired me. I also would like to have a family of my own one day.
When did you start your journey?
I had RNY surgery (Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass) on December 12, 2017. I am still a work in progress with no set target weight. I just want to feel like I can do any activity with ease — no stress, strain, or backache.
How did you change your eating habits?
I started eating a lot more protein, vegetables, and a limited amount of fruit. I stopped eating fast food and junk foods. During my journey, I’ve used a liver reduction diet and vegan Shakeology protein shakes as well.
My tool (surgery) keeps me in check regarding portion sizes for sure. My surgery also makes me extremely picky about what I eat as I can eat something today, and it won’t necessarily work out for me to eat it the next day or next week… its crazy sometimes.
What did your workout routine consist of?
I do Zumba, Bootcamp, and Beachbody. I also work out at the gym. I work out daily. 3-4 days a week, I would do two workouts a day. I also participated in Fitbit workweek challenges with coworkers and friends.

My starting weight was 441.8 pounds, and my current weight is 240.2 pounds.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?
Weight loss takes time and effort. This is not a race. This journey is more than just eating and exercising. Mental health is also an important factor.
What advice do you have for women who want to lose weight?
Start and don’t stop. Remember, we are all a work in progress, and weight loss does not occur overnight. We all have bad days, but you have to wake up the next day and get back on track. Also, I suggest drinking LOTS OF WATER!
